Welcome

Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women. I know, because it happened to me--no family history, out of the blue (and into the pink). A year later, after a mastectomy, chemo and radiation, I am still here. I'm thriving, surviving and living out from under the shadow of cancer.

2nd Week of Radiation Therapy Complete, a Friendly Squirrel and A New Camcorder.

Friday, June 11th, 2010
(6.15 mi./12,998 steps) 649 cal.
Woke up early and made pineapple, strawberry and carrot juice for myself and The Aunt. Was earlier than yesterday, but still had to stand on the 4 for a few stops until a seat was available.

Woot! 2nd week of radiation therapy is completed! Nice cool day outside, threatening rain...but not while I was out. I had the best walk today. I took the 4 Train down to 86th Street and walked down Lexington past Hunter College to 59th Street. Crossing over to 5th Avenue, I entered Central Park and found a quiet place above the Boathouse Restaurant. A bench on a path that was well traveled afforded a peaceful spot to think and enjoy the birds singing. The best thing about Central Park to me is, you can sit in one of a thousand places in it, and forget you are in one of the largest cities in the world.  If you are coming to New York City, make sure this beautiful park is one of the places you visit.  Official website here:

I met a friendly squirrel that was more than glad to eat a large share of my low salt cashews, peanuts, almonds and Brazilian nuts. A pretty male cardinal also paid me a visit and I gave him a bit of granola. I ate the chocolate granola and a banana I bought from a street vendor. I read Think and Grow Rich as I sat there soaking up the peace and relative quiet. Wishing I had a camcorder, but not having one, I continued to walk in the park in the section called The Bramble. I saw an Asian man practicing Tai Chi under a tree. I was compelled to watch him for a minute or two, again wishing I had a camcorder.

I walked along the East Drive back up to 86th Street. I walked to Lexington and bought a Kodak  recorder that's waterproof ( I thought of the rain, not so much scuba diving....but hey, who knows?) and easy to carry on my fanny pack belt. I walked back home along Lexington and stopped in a bagel shop and bought a whole wheat bagel with butter (yes it's true, butter is better for you in moderation, than margarine is) and Tropicana Orange juice. No juice tastes better than what I make at home anymore. As I ate, I assembled my camcorder and tried it out—easy to work, with a nice picture.

I had one unfinished errand to run. A shoe repair shop owner let me have an umbrella on a rainy day earlier this week and I was a few dollars short. Today I was happy to take him the money I owed him.  New York does have compassionate, caring people--and they are always a pleasure to meet.
